Thomas International Foods Murray Bridge SAJan 2018
The Murray Bridge Abattoir operated by Thomas International Foods, one of the largest in the country employing some 1400 people, has been closed down by a massive fire. The fire began around 7pm on Wednesday, 3 January 2018, and quickly engulfed the meat works' boning room, recently part of a multi-million dollar upgrade. The fire took over five days to extinguish and completely destroyed the factory's main building as crews had to tear down large parts of the structure to get at the fire. At one point 100 firefighters were battling the blaze.
As the plant has to be demolished damage is thought to be over $300million and due to a complex company structure multiple insurance companies are involved. GKAIG has completed a thorough examination and provided the insurers with their report as to cause of the fire and the consequent insurance issues.
